چکیده

Distillation has remained an important separation technology for the chemical process industries. In 1997 it was reported in the journal Chemical Engineering that about 95% of all worldwide separation processes use this technology. In the USA alone, some 40000 distillation columns represent a capital investment of about US $8 billion. They consume the energy equivalent of approximately 1 billion barrels of crude oil per day. Such columns are used in reRneries, petrochemical plants, gas processing plants and organic chemical plants to purify natural gas, improve gasoline, produce petrochemicals and organic products, recover pollulant species, etc. Distillation can be carried out in a tray or a packed column. The major considerations involved in the choice of the column type are operating pressure and design reliability. As pressure increases, tray coulmns become more efRcient for mass transfer and can often tolerate the pressure drop across the trays. The design procedure for the large diameter tray column is also more reliable than that for the packed column. Thus, trays are usually selected for large pressurized column applications. Distillation trays can be classiRed as:

CFD Simulation of Concap Tray Hydrodynamics

This research includes both experimental and CFD investigation in the hydrodynamic behavior of a new type of column tray introduced as “Concap” tray. The proposed column tray is used in contactor columns especially in stripping columns. The hydrodynamics of this Concap tray is investigated in a 1.2m in diameter column. Using air-water system, the experiments were performed for different liquid ...

Evaluating the Reliability of an Accurate Performance in Tray Columns Using Gamma Ray Scanning Technique

The nondestructive techniques are applied to identify important data from the internal process of distillation towers, process towers, pressure vessels and etc. In recent, the gamma-ray scanning techniques as diagnostic tools for scanning of tray columns, packed columns, storage tanks, level measurement and density measurement of containing materials has been used widely. This paper has tried t...

Optimal synthesis of complex distillation columns using rigorous models

The synthesis of complex distillation columns has remained a major challenge since the pioneering work by [Sargent, R.W.H., & Gaminibandara, K. (1976). Optimal design of plate distillation columns. In L.C.W. Dixon (Ed.), Optimization in action. New York: Academic Press]. In this paper, we first provide a review of recent work for the optimal design of distillation of individual columns using tr...

Short-cut distillation columns based on orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable

Increasing competition in the process industries enforces the application of mathematical simulation techniques both in the design phase and in the operating phase of a plant. The basic apparatus for separation processes is the distillation column. Its rigorous (tray by tray) mathematical modelling results in a system of simultaneous nonlinear equations (algebraic in the steady-state case, diff...
